I really can’t believe it was ten years ago when I first met up with Jeff Griffith, the Bazos family, and all the other Dolphins fans for Dan Marino’s last game in Jacksonville in January 2000.
I met with them all in a hotel not far from the stadium, and I would of never have thought that this was going to change so many peoples lives over the next ten years.
I can honestly say that I feel so happy to have done this that words can’t tell you. The friendships that have come out of these chance meetings, the fun, holidays and of course Dolfan UK.
Meeting them all and the way Jeff was running the DolFan Club was such a buzz. Yes I know we lost the game and yes it’s the worst loss ever, but I can tell you this I would of never thought of doing any of what was to come.
At this point, I would like to say a huge thanks to Andrew Ready and Chas Smith who helped with the early part of what has become a great and growing club. The first club trip will go down as legendary for the club, and I am sure that many of you can tell me and the rest of the club the joy you have had since then.
The club took a new direction in 2006, and with new committee this club took a new direction that is hard to match anywhere.
Along with technology, we have gone from a monthly printed news letter, with stories and articles reproduced from the internet (we didn’t all have the internet back then!) to our own web site that I am sure you will agree is superb.
Formal arrangements are now in place with the Dolphins and NFLUK for game tickets, which is something that has been developed over the last three years.
We now have our membership packs that have some wonderful goodies in. Our club logo was and re-designed and improved, along with our membership cards, club pins, and so on. We seem to be growing from strength to strength, and it is great to hear from ex-members now interested in rejoining us.
Of course, we are also very fortunate to have Jim "Mad Dog" Mandich as our Honourary President, and have enjoyed his support over many years now.
DolFan UK is now known to the NFL, and also enjoys excellent ties to the Miami Dolphins and NFLUK.
Can I say that without Brian Tennent, Carla & Bob Ball, and Dave Wilson, this club would of never got to this pinnacle. On behalf of all the club, I’d like to thank you for the hours you have put in with me to make this happen. We all try and meet at least once a month to put ideas forward and plan events, and are always throwing around ideas between ourselves to improve the club and move ever forward.
Everyone that has travelled to games in Miami, or other states to follow our team, and everyone present at the 2006 Club Do all helped collectively to persuade Mr Huizenga to bring the Dolphins to Wembley in 2007, and make the whole event an outstanding success. There is now even talk that we could have a team in London and even a Pro Bowl or Super Bowl?
Let me tell you that none of this would have happened if it was not for this club and it’s Dolphins fans leading the way three years ago.
So here’s to the next ten years of DolFan UK, and long may we all continue to make that trek across the Atlantic with our friends and families to see what I believe to be the greatest NFL team of all time, our very own Miami Dolphins.
Well, the first day of pre-season training has now passed, and our very own Man From Miami has sent in his photos of the session. Please take a look in the gallery.
The new edition of the President's Address has now been sent out, and voting for last season's MVP has now opened. Please check your emails for the forms and return to Eddie.
Memberships are now due, please check your emails and the President's Address for details.
The committee would like to apologize for the delay in sending out the President's Address. This is due to last month's committee meeting having to be postponed due to circumstances beyond our control.
Please rest assured that your committee is continuing to work behind the scenes for DolFan UK, and that an "Address" will be forthcoming in the next few weeks, along with emails regarding the membership renewals, due in August.
For those of you who have ordered either Wembley, or Miami tickets, our treasurer, Dave Wilson will be in contact in the coming days regarding payment for them.
We are happy to announce the ticketing arrangements for the 2010 season. Details have already been emailed to our members, but information can also be found in the ticket information section.
It has been widely reported that the DolFan Club in Miami has been put on hold for a year.
Please note that we are in no way affected, and that DolFan UK will continue to operate as usual!
We are very pleased that the Dolphins signed Zach Thomas for a day today, allowing him to retire as a Dolphin.
As Zach revealed in his interview with us last year, his wish has now come true, and on behalf of DolFan UK, we wish you all the very best in your retirement, and hope to see you back in the NFL as a coach at some point in the future!
"I am flattered beyond words to be the President of Dolfan UK. I have witnessed, first hand, on many occasions, the incredible enthusiasm and passion of the club. We’ve suffered through some tough times recently but I am abundantly confident under Parcells and Ireland and Sparano, we’re on our way back.
We will have our day and when that day comes I look forward to hoisting a few pints in celebration with the brotherhood across the pond!"
